Shelf & District Community Group

This section gives details of all the great events and activities we have organised.

Pig Race Night

We recently held a Pig Race at the Bottomley's Arms. Saturday 25th April saw the pink pigs racing to raise funds for our Park refurbishment project.  Local business sponsored each race and local community members purchased pigs for £5 each.  We had a great night and raised £444.40 from all the generous locals.  Dave and Tracey Dixon hosted this event along with a great raffle. A Big thank you to Dave, Tracey and Jo the land lady at the Bottomley's Arms for hosting and making the evening go with an 'oink!'

Waiting for the start and their off! Winner - Tracey Dixon

Shelf Gala 2015

Some of our kind volunteers (and committee) were at the Shelf Gala raising funds.  As it was 4th July we decorated with flags and bunting from the USA.  Lots of tombola prizes on offer!

Laughter Activities Friendships and Fun [LAFF] Event

We held our very first event on 21st March 2015 at St Michael's School.  We hoped for a great atmosphere,  wanted to get people involved and have a really fun, fantastic event.

In all over 400 visitors attended to take part in our Great Shelf Bake Off, buy a raffle ticket in the hopes of winning one of our super prizes [all kindly donated by local Shelf Businesses] and purchase many great items from our various stalls.

Face painting, balloon characters, old fashioned photo's, blender bikes and many other great activities were on offer.

The Jamsters kindly provided some great background music for the day.  The West Yorkshire Police arranged a football tournament between Shelf J&I and St Michaels School. Trophies were abundant!

Our guest VIP's were Joe Duttine - star of Coronation Street who opened the event along with Councillor Pat Allen, Mayor of Calderdale who very kindly judged the Great Shelf Bake Off competition.

The event was a great success and comments from many visitors were very complimentary.

Dog Chipping Event

This event was held on 7th November 2014 at Shelf Village Hall.  We arranged a Dog Chipping event in conjunction with The Dogs Trust and Calderdale Council.  It was a very successful event and approximately 30 dogs were brought along to be chipped in advance of chipping becoming a legal requirement in April 2016.  Chipping was free for any dog [accompanied by their owner!] and leaflets were available to raise awareness of dog owner responsibilities to try and combat the dog fouling problem in and around Shelf.

Shelf Clean up

When the group was first formed we were requested to try and clean up some of the fly tipping in and around Shelf. A committee member took up the baton and contacted Calderdale Council to assist with clean up of the various sites. Work was done to clean up the steps area at the side of the Duke William.

Here is a copy of the environment report produced.

Building Access

Work taking place at the Caritas Surgery on Shelf Moor Road earlier in the year caused issues,  as access to the building was only by a side entrance which was overgrown and badly in need of some repair.  A committee member contacted Calderdale Council and the Community Wardens to tackle the access issue.  This was promptly dealt by the council and warden and access for patients and visitors was improved.

The committee member also spoke to Caritas Surgery partners about the issue of access but were advised that it was the owner of the building that had not been forthcoming with the work.  The committee member then wrote to the owner of the surgery land and building to 'encourage' the work to be commenced urgently.

We are pleased to say that the work commenced within 7 days of the letter being received and access was restored to the main doors.
